PNG - Portable Network Graphics

Portable Network Graphics is a format for storing bit-mapped (raster) images on computers and known to be the successor of GIF format. It contains a bitmap of indexed colors and uses lossless compression, similar to a GIF file but without copyright limitations.

Portable Network Graphics has a file extension '*.png'. The limitation of 256 colours in GIF and its patent by Unisys, lead to the development of PNG format in early 1995. Users need low-resolution images that look good and load quickly.

Portable Network Graphics supports 3 types of images :-

  • Palette-based images
  • Full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images
  • Grayscale images
